Wondering what to do when you have mold on your house siding? Here’s the answer

How to remove mold on siding

There are many reasons you might have mold on your house siding. It’s been raining and wet, and if you’re siding in a particular area of your house, may not get enough sunlight, this could be one reason mold forms. If there are trees or bushes that shade part of your home, it might be time to think about eliminating these trees, cleaning up the environment that surrounds your home.  Dirt is another reason mold may form, mold clings to surfaces like dirt, and if your siding is dirty, it could potentially be an incubator for mold. Keeping your siding clean can be a deterrent to mold. Frustrating as it is, there are solutions to ridding the dirt from your house siding.

Once the initial determination is made that you have mold, the key is to get rid of it because it’s not going to go away on its own, mold spreads. There are many things you can do to rid the mold on your home. First, you could take a trip to your local hardware store and ask your retailer what are the best products for removal of mold. Typically, you’ll see 7 to 8 different products on retailer shelves for cleaning mold. A vinyl siding cleaner, and a little elbow grease, may be just what you need. If you’d like to remove mold without going to the hardware store. A solution with 70% water and 30% white vinegar may work as well. Sometimes, you may need to add a little powdered laundry detergent, household cleaner and laundry bleach into the mix, to make it stronger. Wondering if you should use a power washer? If you do, make sure you use products that are made specifically to run through a power washer, so you don’t ruin your equipment.

The next question you are probably asking, is what is the cost to have mold professionally removed from your home? A fair question, and it can be easily answered. In Northeast Wisconsin, an average cost per square foot is around $1 – $2 a foot. However, there are variables to the equation, and it may cost more or less depending on these questions. First, the longer a mold is left on a surface, the longer it has been embedded, the harder it takes to get it off — sometimes it can leave a stain, even after the mold is gone. Mold can adhere to paint, and can ingrain into the pores of concrete and cause staining.  So, if you have had a home, and you’ve had mold for 10 years or more, mold is going to be harder to get off than a homeowner that has had mold on his or her home for 3 months. Secondly, if you have a large area versus a smaller area, like a porch, the square footage is going to be more expensive for a smaller area, than a larger area. Think about it, we still have to prepare and do all the same processes on a small area versus a larger area. So the cost will be slightly less on a larger area.
