Most home fires start in the kitchen over any other room in the house.  So it’s important to always be alert and focused on this day of feasts.  According to a video report from ABC News website working with Jersey City Fire Department, here are 5 quick tips to help prevent kitchen fires:

5 Tips for Preventing Kitchen Fires

  • Don’t wear loose fitting clothing near open flames
  • Don’t leave your cooking food unattended on the stove or in the oven
  • If deep-frying a turkey, do it outside
  • Never put water on a grease fire
  • Store fire extinguishers in plain sight and near an exit – not under the sink.

Below is the video from ABC.

Another great source for Thanksgiving fire safety tips is from the National Fire Protection Association.  Some of their best tips are similar to the ones shared in the video above but also include but are not limited to:

  • Keeping children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags with hot food and liquids.
  • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

At CCS, we are wishing you and your family a very Happy and Safe Thanksgiving.  Keep these tips fresh and you’ll be able to keep your family, pets and home safe.
