Pets and Mold – Can They Get Sick From Mold Too?

Pets and Mold - Mold Removal by CCS Property Services of WisconsinPets and Mold!  Most of us understand that mold can make people sick but did you know that mold can also make your pets sick?

Yes, exposure to household mold can make your pets sick, too. Since pets are typically smaller than their adult human owners, the exposure to mold can make them sick faster than adults. This is also much like infants who are more susceptible to mold-related illness than adults.  It’s important to know and keep an eye out for symptoms in your pets.

Mold Exposure in Pets – Common Symptoms

Pets like people vary and the symptoms to mold exposure may vary depending on the type of pet you have. For instance, a dog or cat may show somewhat different symptoms than a guinea pig or rabbit.

Some common symptoms of mold exposure you may notice include:

  • Excessive scratching in the absence of fleas
  • Coughing
  • Sneezing
  • Runny nose
  • Runny eyes
  • Labored breathing
  • Wheezing sound when breathing
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy

What to Do if You Believe You Pet has Been Exposed to Mold

If your pet shows signs and symptoms of exposure to mold, please get your pet to a vet right away.  Let your vet know if your pet has been exposed to mold or if you believe your pet has been exposed to mold and is experiencing symptoms. Your pet’s symptoms probably will not improve and may even continue to get worse as long as he/she is exposed to mold. Once brought to the vet, your vet will choose an appropriate plan for treatment.

Remove the Mold

Now it’s time to remove the mold from the home. You will need to have all household mold cleaned up and removed as soon as possible. It’s a good idea to have a mold removal professional do this type of work to make sure the job is done correctly and completed in a timely manner. Pets are family members too and you’ll want your pet to be safely at home with you and the rest of your family.
